Vintage Containers for Focal Interest

Hi All,

Haven’t posted in a while…sorry. Life happens but hopefully I’m back. Have been very busy this gardening season, planting and spending a lot of time moving older specimens around for better placement. I had recently seen an article in Better Homes and Gardens where they had filled an old pot with leafy begonias and choleas as a centering piece to a small garden. I thought it was a great idea. As you can see, I found a beautiful, vintage milk carton, with a spigot and placed it as the centerpiece to my side garden. It’s especially key, in that it’s the first thing one sees when they open the gate to my yard. As usual, and to the chagrin of my husband, I’ve added quite a bit of side players since its first staging to further enhance its appearance.

On another topic, but nonetheless extremely important to gardening, is the closure of many local gardening centers. Unfortunately, in the last year I’ve seen four local garden centers close. I understand how difficult it is competing with the Home Depots, Lowe’s and other large national stores. But I implore everyone to please whenever possible to frequent your local growers. They are incredibly more knowledgeable and in general have a more diverse selection of plants. My favorite local greenhouse is Vecchio’s in Closter, NJ. The owners, Len and Debbie are extremely helpful and go out of their way to explain any and everything about the plants you’re purchasing.
